The Folk Museum in Dietenheim

The open-air museum

The Folk Museum in Dietenheim near Bruneck was founded in 1976. A very old and noble farm is the home of the museum. Altogether there are four “Maierhof” farms, a village which was first documented in 995. The name itself traces back to the first settlements of the Baiuvarii.

Nature Park Houses...

Among the primary goals of the South Tyrolean concept of nature parks are the protection of nature and landscape, scientific research and landscape maintenance, as well as the environmental education of the visitors and the promotion of a wider understanding of nature and landscape among the population. The Nature Park Houses are pivotal to this educational effort. At least one of these visitors' centers is planned for each nature park. The Nature Park Houses are attractively equipped structures managed by experts. In order to grant a deeper insight to the interested public, each Nature Park House concentrates on a main issue, which is presented to the visitors through exhibitions, the display of habitats and geological peculiarities, dioramas, reliefs and other means.

Taufers Castle ...

The mighty Castle Taufers is a hereditary castle of the lords of Taufers (Tures) with an impressive and interesting defensive fortification. In the 15th and 16th century the castle was extended into a spacious residential fortress. In 1977 it came into the possession of the South Tyrol Institute of Castles. Completely furnished and very well preserved, this castle is among one of the largest and most beautiful in all of Tyrol. Around two thirds of the 64 rooms are panelled in wood. The frescoes in the castle chapel, painted by Friedrich Pacher, are particularly precious. Well worth seeing are the lord’s room, the big library, the courtroom, the so called ghost room, the dungeon, the armoury and the numerous tiled stoves.

Copper mine in Prettau

The most important information about the single museum structures.
Mine Prettau open for visitors

The copper mine near the Rötbach stream was probably already in use during the Bronze Age. A bronze poleaxe which was found in the mine in 1864 proves this theory. It is supposed that the poleaxe originates from the time between 1300 and 1000 B.C. The mine was first mentioned in history in 1426. Two rifles were cast for the sovereign Friedrich IV (called “Friedl and the empty pocket”) which were then used to siege Castle Greifenstein.

The digging used to start at the place where the ore reached the earth’s surface. In Prettau this happened to be near the „Rötkreuz“ at about 2000 metres sea level. The one to ten metre wide metalliferous lodes reached down 550 metres. The galleries which lead to the lodes got longer the more they approached the bottom of the valley.
